Maplewood’s 108th annual celebration is organized by the Fourth of July Committee, MCA, and financed by your Tag purchase! Tags are required for admission, especially to the circus, music and fireworks! ($10 per tag, babes in arms free). Tags will be available at Maplewood merchants, libraries, etc.

The day begins at 7:45 a.m., when we assemble at Ricalton Square for the 8 a.m. Opening Ceremonies. VFW color guard and representatives of the Township Committee lead the Flag Salute & Anthem. The Bikes, etc. Parade steps off from Ricalton Square at 8:15 a.m. —it’s Everything Push, Pedal or Pull: red, white & blue decorated bikes, kazoo band, toddlers’ pots & pans band, rollerbladers. Individuals and neighborhoods are invited to create original theme parade entries. The Parade concludes in Memorial Park at the athletic field opposite Town Hall in time for the 9 a.m. Dashes & Relay Races (Maplewood residents, requires sign-up form). 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons are awarded. Maplewood Girl Scouts will be running the morning concession (coffee, water, etc.) near the Field House.

9 to 9:40 a.m. is the Third Annual Fourth of July 5K Run, which starts and finishes on Oakview Avenue near the Field House (watch for 5K flyers for registration information).

Walk to the “Making a Hill/Tumbling Cubes” at 10 a.m. (downhill from the Maplewood Station). Help build and decorate the sculpture (open to all ages, Maplewood residents) presented by John Kaufman and Tom Carlson and sponsored by Memorial Post 10120 VFW and 1978 Maplewood Arts Center.

Ice Cream Eating Contests, presented by Maplewood Rotary, begin at 11 a.m. in the picnic area next to playground (Maplewood residents K-12 & Adults). 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons are awarded.

Baking Contest entries need to be at Town Hall between 9 and 9:30 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m. Baking Contest (all ages, Maplewood residents). Awards categories include cake, pie, pastry, bread, cookie/bar and presentation. Judging with help from Janet Crane of Crane’s Deli.

12 noon, in front of the Main Library you’ll find pets of all types and all sizes showing off in the Pet Show, presented by the NJ Animal Coalition! (Maplewood residents). Over at the athletic field opposite Town Hall play (or watch) adult Softball, 12 to 3 p.m. And starting at 12, downhill from Maplewood Station, you’ll find the Kids’ Percussion Forest by Jamie Ross.

The Zerbini Family Circus performs at 1:00, 3:30 and 6 p.m., under the big top, rain or shine, first-come first-served. There are no reserved seats and seating is limited, so line up early! Zerbini, part of eight generations of circus people, is an old-fashioned, small traditional family circus with acrobats, dancing, juggling, clowning and dog and pony shows. At extra charge, there are pony and camel rides, ship slide and moon bounce attractions and food concessions.

Come to the lawn (opposite town hall) 3:30 p.m. until fireworks for live music featuring local young and adult bands. Picnic and get ready for the fireworks. Ice cream will be on sale. Hotdogs etc. will be sold at evening food concession by Maplewood BSA Troop 5, celebrating it’s 90th and BSA’s 100th anniversary.

Fireworks are scheduled for 9 p.m., but come early because all times are approximate.

Participating vendors in Maplewood village: Burgdorff ERA Realtors, Crane's Delicatessen & Cheese Shoppe, Maplewood Stationery, No.165, Village Wine Shop and Words Bookstore. On Springfield Avenue: Kari’s Café and Park Wood Diner. And on July Fourth, in Memorial Park and at evening event entrance gates.
